I’m Honduran I came here ten years ago.
When I first came here the conditions were favorable…up to five years ago.
When the economy started going bad the boss said…
“We are going to let go 25 people.” I was amongst the 25.
I have been without work since June 17th. I have been looking but I keep hearing that it’s the economy and it just hasn’t gotten better.
If one works for 6 to 9 months there are some benefits but if you only work 2 to 3 months then they wont give you benefits.
I suffer from asthma. I look for ways to cure…it’s not curable rather I look for ways to keep it under control
because I can’t go to the doctor.
I fled my country. Women don’t have many protections for anything. I managed to make it here and I worked for 5 years comfortably.
I helped my kids, my family and my mother. I can’t help her now and she is sick.
Every weekend that I call home, she will ask me “Daughter I need money I need medicine” and with pain in my heart I have to tell her that I can’t help her.
The truth is the [economic] crisis is choking us.
There is no work. I have looked for work.
I went today to apply for a job where it was listed that they were looking for a baker.
This is where discrimination affects me. I am a baker. I used to make it… I use to sell it.
But they said “No. We need a man.”
I am a woman and women have the same capacity.
I would like for there to be equality for all.
