We looked around and saw there was
the biggest population of people to benefit from clinical psychology training
is the public, but they had the least input
into how the training was developed. And so with that in mind
we approached several organizations of service users
people who are using health services and asked if they’d get involved in a project
actually changing the direction of clinical psychology training at Manchester
Definitely should involve the public more and the service users
because we’re the ones that is getting the treatment, so we should have an input into it to say that
“This is how to treat a person with a mental illness”, "This is the way to talk to them"
instead of putting all the power on them, to a certain degree, work with them.
We’re involved in a whole range of aspects of things
so we’re involved in delivering lectures
peer reviewing lectures, and we make notes from a community perspective
on whether we feel the content is covering things we feel are important
Then we give feedback to the lecturers and hopefully from that
they will take that onboard so when they’re doing that thing again another time
But having had community members
sort of, giving them feedback about their lectures
or having community member actually deliver lectures along side lecturers
has really added a richness to the course
The students are all happy, the students are all asking more questions
"What do you think about this?", "Do you think this is the way to do it?" "Or do you think this is the right way to do it?"
And then when they go into the community, they’ve got a better idea of how to work with service users
We’ve been given some money to turn this into a social enterprise
because of the success of it so far. And really, I think the purpose of turning it into an enterprise is to say
well, this is valuable stuff, the community's expertise really does help health training
