The Womens resource center is run by the student activities office. Students are able to drop
in here from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at night. When they come into the offices they usually have
a particular need, and so we have two or three staff people who are able to address that
immediate need. At the Womens Resource Center I am a project assistant. I currently run
two programs. One is this women of color sister talk that's meshed with the multicultural
womens film series. I'm not ashamed or afraid to share my culture, so often times when I'm
leading or facilitating different groups I will wear traditional African fabric. Not
just for me to say that I'm showing off and being proud of my culture, but the message
that it sends to other people that it's okay to wear these things. And that begins the
about building and understanding culture. It's really, really encouraging to be someone
who is in urban education who can actually be apart of the change that's happening. I
defiantly had a chance to connect with students all accross the campus, about issues that
truely affected them. Issues that they had seen and been involved with; not just in their
daily lives as students but as people, as individuals. And so putting that all together
has really been the beauty of me working here at the womens resource center.
