I’m Mara Vitolins. I’m a nutrition researcher and a registered dietitian.
Interestingly, women can spend a third to half of their lives in menopause. A nice natural
approach used to reduce hot-flashes is to consume soy. Soy contains isoflavones which
are weakly estrogenic molecules that are found within the soy protein itself. So essentially,
as a woman is going through menopause, her estrogen levels are lowering and by consuming
these foods you can sort of bolster those levels a little bit.
Soy is easy to incorporate into your diet. It is found in abundance in the grocery store,
including soy milk, there are soy cheeses and there are soynuts, as well as cereals
that contain soy protein in them. I recommend two to four servings per day.
That would get a woman at the level of the studies where they’ve shown effectiveness.
A woman should expect to feel results in about four weeks. While a woman may not get complete
relief from her hot flashes, she should keep in mind that she’s consuming a very healthy
protein, so there is benefit even beyond the hot-flashes.
