Hi, I’m Dr. Greg McDonald and I am here for Expert Village.com. We are talking about
flea control in your dogs and cats as well as ticks. If you would like to go to my website,
the website is www.petpointers.com and I am a veterinarian at McDonald Veterinary Hospital
in Santa Barbara, California. This is my friend Stripes here and we are going to use him as
a demonstration cat but we wanted to talk a little bit about why we are talking about
flea and tick control in your cat. Fleas can cause a lot of derma logical problems in your
pet. Some times if a flea is actually biting the cat and a cat happens to be allergic to
the bite of the flea they can itch for 7 days not just where the flea bit him but all over
the whole animal. We really want to take care of the fleas and anybody who sees a flea we
know that it is just not very safe for the pet to have them and it is not a very friendly
thing either. They drop little bits of blood from your dog or cat all over your house.
Also with ticks it is very important because ticks carry a lot of different diseases. In
this part of the country we usually just see the lime disease but there are a lot of other
diseases that we can see that can be transmitted by ticks. The bubonic plague actually was
transmitted by the rat flea and so these diseases can be very serious and it is something we
really want to take control. So we will be talking a little bit about how to control
these things and we are also going to give a little demonstration on Stripes here about
how to put those things on. We will be back in a minute to do those.
