Hello and welcome to this new tutorial
In this video I will show you how I paint hair using Paint Tool Sai
To begin with, we need to have drawn the lineart and filled it using our base color.
The next thing we are going to do is to create a clipping layer ABOVE our base color layer.
Then pick up your first shadow color and start adding strands.
Don't limit yourself to follow the lineart when adding shadows, or it'll make it look empty.
Once you have finished adding the first shadow, block the layer and select your second shadow.
Now start to add darker tones on the parts which are on the back and at the hairline.
Pick the fourth and last tone and add it to the parts that should be darker.
Now you can unblock the layer and start to blend out all the strands. I like to use the brush tool with a density from 35 to 45.
Don't worry if some parts need to be fixed, because we will do it later.
You can even add more strands to make it look better.
No it's time to fix, for doing it we will be using the transparent color.
Start brushing the strands where you need to fix them, and on the hairline so you can make it look like the hair is growing out from there.
You can also darken some strands even more.
Now go to Edit > Copy and set the layer to Multiply mode.
Lower the opacity of the layer a bit until you think it is alright and use the Blur tool to ease off some parts.
Then create a new Multiply layer and use the airbrush tool and the base color
to add shadows to the back part, the hairline and the bottom of the hair.
To pick the highlights color I create a new Luminosity layer and I draw a line using the base color. Then use the dropper to take it.
Delete the Luminosity layer and create a normal one. Now select your Pencil tool and select S-3 on the Stabilizer.
Then start to add little lines to create the highlights.
If you don't like some parts, just use the Blur tool to fix them
Now create an Overlay layer and set your stabilizer to 3. Then pick some complementary colors and add them.
Blur the colors and adjust the layer's opacity until you think it looks alright.
-OPTIONAL- create a new layer ABOVE the lineart and use the dropper and the pencil to add some little strands.
-OPTIONAL- You can also create a clip layer ABOVE the lineart, then select the darker shadow and paint the lines.
And that's all folks! Don't hesitate to comment if you have any doubt or suggestion.
