Kinetico- The Importance of Having Your Water Tested
Hi, I’m Dean Johnson, host of the home improvement television series, Hometime and I’m Miriam
Johnson. On our show, we work on a lot of home improvement projects, both small and
large. Something that we’re noticing more and more lately is that homes are having issues
with water quality, and many times without the homeowner even knowing that the problems
are being caused by their water. You may have seen symptoms like dry skin, hard water scale,
soap ***, chlorine, tastes and odors yourself. Many times, the quality of your water is to
blame.
We especially see hard water take a toll on new fixtures we’ve installed and leave scale
and *** on tubs, shower doors, sinks and more. It can also adversely affect water using
appliances. And look at the inside of this water heater – hard water has certainly
caused problems here. Many homeowners also report dry skin and hair as a result of hard
and/or chlorinated water. Even clothes can wear and fade prematurely because of the water.
Poor taste or odor in their water normally has people looking for drinking water alternatives,
as well.
You can take certain steps to eliminate these problems but it’s important to understand
the underlying causes first. If you’re on city water, the source that the water utility
uses can create issues with water quality, even if it meets all federal standards. The
water is often still hard, contains disinfection chemicals and can contain other substances.
Even if the water is completely pristine when it leaves the waterplant, it must travel through
miles of pipes before it reaches your home. The problem is that our infrastructure is
aging and breaks occur regularly. Even when they don’t, since water is a universal solvent,
it can collect contaminants as it makes its way through the distribution system.
If you get your water from a private well, then your water quality is not regulated and
can be subjected to many environmental influences including minerals and contaminants in the
ground, fertilizer runoff and animal waste. Even if you don’t live directly near a potential
contamination point, chemicals and waste can easily travel across land and underground
to influence your water quality. And water quality can vary from home to home even though
they may be right next to one another, simply because private wells can tap into different
aquifers underground.
For the sake of your home and your peace of mind, I recommend getting a simple in-home
water test from a qualified Kinetico water professional. Your Kinetico water pro can
conduct a number of tests at your house for free and with no obligation to help you determine
if your water is what’s causing issues in your home. Your Kinetico professional can
even direct your water sample to a state certified laboratory if you’re interested in additional
testing. And if you decide you’d like to do something to correct your water problem,
he can recommend a solution, as well.
So call your local Kinetico water professional today just like I did more then 15 years ago.
I’ve loved my water ever since.
