Welcome to Massalijn!
Today is March 8th, Women's Day.
We are here at Dam Square in Amsterdam...
...where people are celebrating this day.
But what is Women's Day?
Can you tell us a bit about the history of this day?
This day came into existence a long time ago, over 100 years ago.
Women have always been oppressed.
This day became a special day after in the United States...
...a lot of women factory workers demonstrated for higher wages.
On that day a lot of them were shot and killed by the police.
And that day was March 8th.
It was later called International Women's Day.
So its history has started over 100 years ago.
And why do you still organize on March 8th?
In such a way we want to show that we support women.
We must be united, hand in hand.
And the whole world should make sure that women do not get ***...
...or get oppressed, and that women be free...
...and have equal rights.
We are not going to pay for their crisis!
No, we are not, going to pay for their crisis!
No! We are not, going to pay for their crisis!
No, we are not, going to pay for their crisis!
No!
What do women fight for specifically?
They fight against violence against women, and that women get paid equal to men...
...and against forced labor, because in Amsterdam nowadays there is forced labor.
Some women are being required by social services to do labor.
There's so many themes which are still important.
There has to be change.
The people have to be conscious that women are still being oppressed.
If you hear about oppression, most of the people only think about third world countries, but...
...even in the Netherlands women are being oppressed...
...financially, sexually or mentally. Women are still being oppressed.
And unfortunately because it is still the case, we need to let our voices be heard.
I'm here because March 8th is an important day.
It is a day where women go to the streets to stand up for their rights.
Women receive extra oppression inside the house, in the workplace, on the streets...
...so it is important that women in such a position fight against this.
They'll have to get out of the kitchen and stop to take the individual responsibility...
...to take care of children and the household.
They have to go on the streets to show that they are not second-class citizens.
I think it's going to be very important that more women join in next year...
...because the economy is only getting worse for women,
welfare is getting cut, and there might be more forced labor.
It is important that women join March 8th, so we can fight together.
So we can do something.
