Hi, my name is Sergio Zambrano
I'm going to show you how to smooth out skin
…on this portrait
even better a close-up
…of a face
I created this filter with "Filter Forge"
…and it basically creates a new layer
with only "the pores" (and works with different with the wrinkles) that you select.
It smooths out the "base" of the skin, e.g. all the bumps
all the bumps, all the big imperfections
and it allows you to apply them back (the pores)
so you can forget about "plastic skin"
this is the result, and this is the original image…
it doesn't involve any cloning
…or rubber stamping
it's just… a filter.
You're going to be using the brush only
for selecting the wrinkles you want to remove
so… let's go ahead, and let's start making a "mask"
Click here, this little box at the bottom of the toolbox…
…and select it.
Now, everthing you paint here, is a mask.
You're not painting "color" to the image.
You're going to only paint in "mask".
So, go ahead and paint up only on top of…
the big wrinkles and bumps that you want to remove.
You're going to see… You can tell, which are the bumps
that you want to select by reducing the image.
You can tell: what you can still see is the wrinkles…
…and if you don't see it… it was probably a pore.
and it's going to be lost at this…
…zoom factor. So…
go ahead and create a mask. I have a mask,I've already created…
This one. So, after you finish the mask
go and "exit" the quick mask…
…clicking again in the button.
Now we have our mask ready.
Now, you are ready to select the filter.
Go to Filter Forge
I'm using it as a "Trial". You can download it…
…for free and use it for a month.
Go to View and select from "Preview Size"
Select "Actual", so you can see the actual pixels
no a reduced version of it.
This photo is from Martin Steinthaler.
I downloaded it from Flicker.
I'm going to "reset" all the values
So I can show you what values does what.
This if the original Image
So, we are going to go ahead and start playing…
with the "stretching radius".
This is the first value that you are going to work with…
This one stretches the skin, smooths out the skin
and you have to smooth it out until you lose any bump…
that you don't want, let's say… 9, in this case.
Now the skin is soft. It didn't lose basic…
important bumps. It lost a little bit on the chin.
I wouldn't use this much because it's going to reduce…
The expression is going to be lost. But anyway…
To the effects of showing you how to smooth the skin,
9 is a good value.
Now play with the "Pores Kept" radius.
This one keeps the pores that you want to keep,
by a radius amount.
Let's say… 3…
Let me show you closer.
The highest you make this value…
…the more imperfections and bumps are recovered
…from the original image. So you WANT to keep the pores.
That (1) is a small value. If you use 1, you're going to have a small pore.
That's good for a very big image, that you want…
to smooth out a lot, like a model's (blowouts)
But… in order to make it real, not plastic…
…we're gonna use 3.
The bigger the number, the wider will be the pores.
In this case, a radius of 3.
Now let's go to fix…
…the wrinkles.
These wrinkles can be fixed…
because you've already selected them
We're gonna select the radius to remove those wrinkles.
4 is a good value for this image.
You can see they're lost.
Now we're going ahead and "recover" the surronding areas,
which are too smoothed now…
by selecting a threshold that makes the surronding areas…
to mimic / match the rest of the skin texture.
Let's try 8… ok.
Now, you're good to go.
You already fixed all the skin without any cloning.
Click "Apply".
It's going to take a while, because…
…I'm recording this video in HD at the same time…
…so it's going to take a little longer.
In this tutorial, I'm telling you what pixel values to use…
…but I'm also telling you what each value does if you…
…increase it or decrease it, but…
…don't let anyone, any blogger or photographer…
to tell you, e.g. in a tutorial, that you HAVE to use
a certain pixel value, because that only works for "their" picture.
Tif they tell you so… they don't even know what they are doing.
Thus, if the image has more resolution, you're going to need…
a highest pixel value… and so on.
This is the final result.
We're going to de-select (Command/Control-D), and we're going to start painting…
We are going to make sure you have this little icon,
with a brush in it, at the left of the original image state,
we are going to go and select the "history brush",
and we are gonna start painting everything we want to "keep",
from the original image, like the eyes, eyebrows.
They're going to be, probably the eyes, lips…
…the edges of the nosetrils…
And the lips. The lips always have more detail…
than everything else, because they are glossy.
We can do the same with the ring…
and every piece of image you have lost detail in.
Probably you won't see it if you're not watching the video in HD…
because the difference is very subtle.
After you made all the brushing, you can go and…
select roughly all the image you want to keep…
in its original state.
I just selected the outside part of the face,
so I can go to "edit / fill", select "history"…
…and that's it.
You've got a retouched skin, without having used any…
rubber stamp, or healing tools.
