The Kansas Union was built in 1927 to honor students,
faculty, staff, and alumni who died in World War I.
And two major additions have since doubled its size.
An arson fire in April 1970 gutted the upper floors of the original section.
The fire was believed to be another action
in a turbulent spring of Vietnam War protests.
The larger of two campus unions, it houses bookstores,
meeting rooms, a ballroom, auditoriums, food services,
the student-run radio station, KJHK, and a bowling alley.
The six historical versions of KU's famous Jayhawk mascot
are embedded in the floor, right inside the main entrance.
