So, I'm going to guess that a lot of people in this room
are really curious about what your typical day is like.
I mean, as a venture capitalist,
were you surprised about what your life is like?
And maybe you could describe to us what it looks like.
Well, as I said, venture capitalist practice many different ways.
I am an odd venture capitalist because I really
focus on very early stage projects, I roll my sleeves up,
and I tend to work more like an entrepreneur
just like I did as a virtual CEO.
So my practice is very different than a lot
of investors who invest in companies,
sort of check in with them once a month at the board level or
once every six weeks and replace the CEO if it's not working.
That's not the way in which I work businesses.
I'm a venture capitalist because I work in venture capital.
I don't very well fit the mold of how
venture capitalist is often practiced.
My day is largely around touching base with most of my companies.
Today, for instance,
I probably spoke to three or four of my ten CEOs,
get a sense of what's going on in their business,
spend ten minutes, spend a half hour,
spend two hours with them to help prepare for what's coming next;
think through problems, whatever that takes.
I look at some new businesses coming in,
some new ventures, maybe do some reference checks about a new
venture coming in and then spend an immense amount of time reading
about what's going on generally in the marketplace.
