Hi I am Evelyn Van Til, community manager at 4th Street Farms, community garden at Wyman
Park, Columbus, Ohio. At 4th Street Farms, we, our community garden, here is on a corner
that historically has been troubled. So creating a safe space in which there can be peace and
serenity, beautiful space, fresh fruit, a place for children and adults to come together
in a positive environment. And we wanted it for ourselves and were fortunate to share
it with out neighbors. OSU Extension has been an incredibly robust partner in our neighborhood
civic association. Susan Colbert has been a tremendous asset in bringing in resources,
and providing areas in which we can collaborate, and brainstorm about ways that we can genuinely
solve the issues and challenges in our neighborhood. So the benefits of gardening are that you
get to know your neighbors, you have a safer space, you have better food, and ultimately
that's what neighborhoods are really about, is community. People getting together, people
sharing food, people sharing stories, and having a great time. At 4th Street Farms are
goals are: eat, educate, empower, and employ. And together we can do that on the ground
here with OSU Extension and our partners at Godman Guild, Columbus Foundation and United
Way. Together we can share food, we can gather together to learn more about our neighborhood,
and our surroundings, and empower ourselves to provide solutions for our neighborhood.
