Scene one take one shot five
Hi I'm Sophie Black I'm the costume and set designer on Wasteland. It's set very much
in a kind of apocalyptic setting and my main inspiration is the idea that everything has
kind of gone back to nature, I'm really inspired by when you see old houses decay and they
actually do seem to get claimed by nature. And also the idea that so there's a lot of
technology around but it's not really useable anymore as there's no electricity so it becomes
set dressing and it rusts gets very old so we got a lot of really vintage electrical
equipment as you can see to really make it look like it's not useable anymore, so that's
the kind of look I'm going for with a lot of locations I'm choosing the set design and
also bringing that a lot into the colour scheme, like there's only natural resources left so
they're scavenging whatever they can or making it from natural fibres. A lot of their clothes
are quite badly fitting to make sure it looks like it's not their clothes so it looks like
they've found it from someone else or Scotts jumper being one a great example of that,
it looks like it's been knitted by very little wool aged quite badly. Beth in particular
we've gone for a very natural colour scheme, because she's a very earthy character who's
the centre of Scotts world, so a lot of her clothes are inspired by the colour of shells
or earthy natural colours. It's a bit different in the flashback scenes we brought a little
bit more colour into it but it's still very natural, I brought some flower prints or some
pastels and coral pinks for Beth to show the slightly happier times.
I'm Deb and I'm the make up artist and hair stylist for Light Films and at the moment
we're filming Wasteland. I have been mainly doing Sham at the moment, who is the character
of Scott. I tend to use a silicone based foundation which is using an airbrush and that actually
is perfect for HD. A lot that we used to be able to get away with on SD cameras you can't
now and so I have to do a really good job and I practically have to make it perfect.
I've been making him look drawn out at the moment he's been living on his own for 5 years.
Today I also got to make up a dead person, he was actually alive and then made him look
dead, that was a lot of fun. The zombies I have lots of plans for the zombies, it's quite
fun thinking of different ways to make someone look like they've either been eaten, half
eaten, about to eat somebody, I've got false legs, I've got bits missing and I'm in the
process of making bite marks and chunks to take out of people, so yeah I'm really looking
forward to the zombies.
