This viewer asks, "where can I find behavioral health help for my child is they are away
at school and having problems?" The best place to check, first, is college counseling services.
Almost every college has these counseling services available. They are normally staffed
with experienced behavioral health professionals who are aware of and experienced in the problems
that children this age come in contact with; however, the sessions are usually limited
to 3 to 4 sessions due to the financial resources, so it's important to know this up front. If
your child is covered under your plan, and you have an employee assistance program benefit,
your child may be eligible to see an EAP professional in their area. What they would need to do
is call the EAP phone number for your employer and and tell them the location and zip code
of where they would want to be looking for services. They can then define age of the
therapist that they're looking for, what there specific problem is, or anything else that
would help find a good fit for your college student and the EAP provider. There are different
plans, so you need to do some checking on what your plan consists of. Some plans have
no charge sessions. 1 to 3 sessions at no charge. Some 1 to 5, and some 1 to 8. So,
it would be important to check ahead of time as to what your number of sessions are, according
to your plan. After EAP benefits have expired, if you have a mental health benefit in your
plan, and your child is covered under your plan, you could then move into using your
mental health benefit. This usually requires a deductible and a copay for each session.
So, that's important to know up front. Thanks so much for your question.
