Gypsy
is a show about a lot of little shows.
It's a family, a dysfunctional family with a very overbearing mother
who is living vicariously through her children,
specifically June who she finds to be the much more talented and you know
vivacious one.
I think the most recognizable songs,
I suppose, are "Everything's Coming Up Roses," which is the
final number of the first act, "If Mama Was Married,"
between the two girls. I actually wasn't really familiar with the musical
before it was announced for the season
and once I started to like really listen to the soundtrack and
and read through the script I was like wow a lot of this is like so
so like prevalent in like the musical theater community and
it's all from this one show you know. It's so funny
Dr. Kolb, our director, focuses so much on how
when the show came out it didn't win
the Tony because "Iolanthe"
and "Sound of Music" were
were in the same category. So of course, like,
I mean it's just a beautiful musical about like nuns
like how could that lose, you know, and it was pretty scandalous with all like
the stripping and
this crazy mother who isn't a very sympathetic character and
she's not the most, you know, cookie-cutter
protagonist. I hope that everyone comes
and can find a bunch of things that they
really enjoy about our specific production. I think it's a blast and I
think that every single person the cast is having
so much fun with it and I just think it's a really
important show to see, I think you can gain a lot from coming and
seeing this
this crazy musical about shows within shows and
and this family.
