So, somebody goes to dinner, and when they get home,
there is a completely renovated space.
That kind of blows your mind.
What do you want to see?
To have this room just be, like, a relaxation sanctuary.
And this is our mark -- Jeremiah.
I am gonna put on this wig.
I would only do this for Amanda.
Good to go?
We're out of here.
It's over 400 square feet, but the biggest thing
is that we are making a huge structural change.
MATTHEWS: We just got to get in there, open the door, and do our jobs.
We're in.
And the rest will be a surprise.
His worst nightmare.
And it's raining.
HUBER: The whole upstairs, the roof, everything will cave in
if we don't temporarily support that wall.
I wouldn't stand right there.
MATTHEWS: And of course, we have to do all of this
while they're out to dinner.
She said now there's only five courses instead of six.
We're gonna be really tight as of right now.
Hey, Jill, what's happening?
We're 10 to 15 minutes away.
Someone's about to get raided.

Closed Captions provided by Scripps Networks, LLC.
So, our mark this week is Jeremiah.
He and Amanda just got married.
They moved into her house
that she had been in for about five years,
and they're having a lot of trouble
trying to make it their own.
So, she really wants to tackle the living-room area.
This is Jim.
Nice to meet you.
This is the space.
At first, it was always kind of my house,
and now that we're married and we're together,
it's our house.
And so, to redo the living room,
it'll just put the final stamp on our new life together.
Well, you know how this works, right?
We're gonna come into your space while you're gone.
We're going to raid it -- completely transform it --
and it's your responsibility
to keep your husband out of the house
Yeah.
Yes.
What is your dream?
When you walk in your front door,
what do you want to see?
What I would love to see
is to have this room just be, like, a relaxation sanctuary.
Media free.
I think you just confused Jim, though,
when you said relaxing room without media.
So it's just for you, then?
Put a really big TV right there.
No TV in this room.
Well, we'll see what we come up with.
And also, if it could just be open to the rest of the house.
Do you mean it connects with the other rooms,
as in color and flow,
or do you mean, like, open a wall?
Opening a wall would really be something
that would just amaze Jeremiah.
Okay.
We're gonna have you step out.
We're gonna look at some design elements,
take some measurements, and start the wheels turning.
I really want to do this for Jeremiah
because our relationship started,
actually, after I already purchased the house.
And I've noticed every little project that we've done together
makes it more our house together.
HUBER: 236 1/2.
236 1/2.
You've got carpet in here,
a different carpet in the living room,
a different carpet in the hallway,
another carpet going up the stairs here.
The living room should be flowing
right into the dining room, but right now,
the dining room is the centerpiece
of everything being disjointed.
I don't think we can actually do the living room
without addressing something here to try and connect it.
And that means the project just got bigger.
Thank you very much.
Good morning, guys.
How's everybody feeling?
Good.
I love when you guys coordinate your outfits for me.
We talk to each other.
Yeah, we talk.
Well, I want to first introduce you guys to the Rangels.
This is our mark, Jeremiah,
and his wife, Amanda, who's our accomplice.
Their spy is one of their friends, Jill.
So, this is our main space that we're gonna be working on,
which is the living room.
Everything is going.
We walk in the door, the couches are going,
the room's being demo'd, the carpet is going.
So, we're clearing it out.
Our first order of business is to retrofit this window.
What we're gonna do is we're gonna trim it out,
make it beautiful, make it functional.
Then the fireplace area.
Right now, there's an electric insert
sitting in that fireplace,
but it was built as a wood-burning fireplace,
so we're gonna reclaim that.
There'll be substantial bookshelves.
But then along the side of the fireplace,
attached to the bookshelves,
there'll be an area to stack wood.
And we're gonna have a really cool finish
for the whole front of the mantel
and a really cool new mantelpiece.
Take a look at this other huge part of our project.
That living-room wall is completely going away.
And then we've got a new railing,
so we're opening up that stairwell.
So, this is your open entrance to the dining-room area.
To join the two spaces together, the one thing that does that,
our favorite thing to do,
is flooring -- throughout the entire space.
It's a little over 400 square feet.
Fine. That's fine. I'll take it.
So, let's take a look at the diagram of this space.
You guys come in the front door right here.
This is our bay window that we're talking about,
and the fireplace is located on this wall.
So Jim, tell me about the wall coming down.
What do you think we're gonna encounter with that?
The wall, right now, is load-bearing,
so we have to build a temporary wall.
The whole upstairs, the roof, everything will cave in
if we don't temporarily support that wall.
Normally, you would build a temporary wall in place.
We don't have time to do that,
so we're building our temporary wall in the warehouse,
but we have to do it in modular pieces
because there's no way we could build a supporting wall
and actually get it through the front door
because it's about 99 inches high.
I'm gonna let the guys kind of wrap their head around the project,
and I'm gonna meet with our homeowner, Amanda,
who's our accomplice, and her friend, Jill,
who's gonna be working as the spy.
So, talk me through what you guys have planned for the night,
'cause we are tackling your entire living-room space
and then some.
It's a big project.
We're gonna go with my sister and my brother-in-law
to a restaurant that's about 30 minutes from our house.
Okay. So, that's a good start.
Well, another plan is for her sister, Theresa,
to come a half-hour later.
I can't have you home a minute before 10:30.
Well, if our meal does not take long enough,
Jill is gonna somehow unhook the battery on my sister's car.
Okay, that sounds amazing and I love it,
but here's the problem.
If somebody's battery is dead,
there's gonna be someone in the parking lot
I'm thinking my sister's gonna have to just say,
"Come on, honey, let's just deal with it tomorrow."
You need to make sure your sister and your brother-in-law
can pull that off.
Okay.
The time you need, you're gonna get it.
Okay. Okay.
It'll be fine. It'll be fine.
[ Laughter ]
Thanks, Amy. Thank you.
If we go out 34 --
I mean, to be safe, we could go 34 1/2.
Banisters and railings take a lot of time to create.
They're detailed finish work that have to be put in perfectly
and they have to be code.
We're thinking that, given the age of the house,
we're gonna have a rise of about eight inches
and a run of about 9 1/2.
So now we're thinking about cutting this.
You'd never, ever build a banister off of location.
How many times have you ever done this?
Never.
So we're actually doing the unheard of.
We're cutting these pieces beforehand.
Yeah.
And how long is that gonna take
So, I don't know.
We'll get there, we might have to modify everything
and cut it again.
I want to cut the spindles to length,
bundle it up nice, and head over.
JILL: They have gone.
I wouldn't stand right there.
We were supposed to already have it in there.
They just finished course one.
CORBIN: 43 1/2.
[ Sighs ]
Breathe.
All right, you guys. Come on in.
Hey, guys.
Everybody, say welcome back to Joel.
Today is our last and crucial day at the warehouse.
We mocked up the space
so we can get the guys inside of it
and they can see exactly what they're gonna run into.
We're gonna run through the whole entire mock builds
and then see where we're sitting at the end of the day,
if five hours is realistic for this project.
Behind you guys is the sun-room
where all the tools are gonna be set up.
On your mark, get set, and go.
Yeah, all right.
So, we need to snap a line here.
Look at that.
Nice.
Then we hack in the wall? What are we doing?
Now we got to cleanly cut those studs.
Where you going?
HUBER: Right against that stud.
15 feet.
CRAIG: Oh, through the front door?
No, we're going through the dining room.
I think it'll work, maybe.
Actually, there's no way this'll go through the dining room.
Yeah.
So, now our problem is there's temp walls in the way right now.
That's what I'm saying. We got to have this in place.
All right.
Too bad it took two of you girls to carry that.
[ Chuckles ]
Amy, are you guys already installing this?
Yeah.
Oh.
Just an observation.
We were so excited to get the cleats up
that we just went for it.
I like the birch wood. That's gonna look cool.
Yeah.
In front of us.
Slide that right in.
You guys want to just grab the mantel?
Did you make this?
Amy, time?
27 minutes in.
To hour two.
It's in.
I'm realizing now all the other issues that came up with it.
You can't get it in the door.
You thought you could.
It has to come through the front door.
And the false wall.
It has to be in before the false wall goes up.
We're gonna burn up blades on that. It's so hard.
We got all of our major components in.
The problem is there's so many other pieces of the puzzle
that we can't simulate during the dry run
that this might be a really tight build
at the end of the day.
Let's go. Let's load this truck.
I'm not locking it.
Good to go?
[ Laughter ]
Let's go.
I have a great plan in place.
I am gonna put on this wig,
and then this purple hat, which I would never, ever wear.
[ Laughing ]
I would only do this for Amanda.
Jeremiah will be beside himself.
He is going to die.
Let's go and do it.
[ Raspy ] So, we're almost
to the rendezvous point up here,
but you're gonna have to rally these guys
'cause I have no voice.
I know. It's very nice.
Right.
I think we might be able to do it this time.
[ Chuckles ]
We are on our way to Amanda and Jeremiah's house right now.
[ Cellphone rings ]
JILL: Hello?
Hey, Jill, it's Amy.
I know, I have no voice, so Jim's here with me.
What's the status? What's going on over there?
Right now, we're just waiting for them to come out at 5:00.
Well, we're in position.
Okay.
Now we wait.
Okay.
JILL: The car is pulling out.
I am pulling into the alleyway right now.
[ Cellphone rings ]
JILL: Amy?
Yes.
Yeah, go ahead.
You're good. Go in.
Go in. She's saying go in.
We're in.
Where did the paint go?
HUBER: The paint's in the front seat of my truck.
Right now, I've got the design team bringing all their stuff in
because they've got to paint the ceiling
before we can get any work done.
Which one? Which one?
Yeah.
I want, like, three guys on furniture duty
and then a couple people pulling carpet,
and the rest of you, finish setting up the tool shop
HUBER: Sounds good.
Okay.
I'm gonna start this wall right now.
All right.
Hey, Gina, this is Amy calling.
We are in the house and we are ready for you at the location.
She's on her way.
Amy.
Do you want to tell Tim?
Oh. His worst nightmare.
Hey, Jill.
Now there's only five courses...
We could potentially have them wrapping up
by about 10 to 9:00.
I don't want to have to pull out a stall tactic,
but we're gonna be really tight as of right now.
So, where's the front? You got the front?
[ Sighs ]
Roll the carpet up.
All right.
Amy.
I'm coming.
Hold on.
Do you want to tell Tim?
Oh. His worst nightmare.
Yeah.
Hey, Tim?
There's, like, four conduits.
Yeah.
Here.
Oh, great.
Where'd that go? Where'd that light go?
Do they all go down?
It goes down. It's flex down.
Yep.
Let me get the wall open,
and I'll just give it to you for a little while.
Thanks.
Was he mad?
[ Chuckles ]
He seemed unaffected, at the moment.
That's good.
Unfortunately, it looks like there's three different flexes
that come out of there.
So that means it might all --
One goes up, one goes to the side,
so we got that issue to address,
but I won't be able to tell until they demo this out.
Ugh.
Ah.
Ah, I got it on me.
That's a beautiful-looking book cabinet.
Why are we losing our lights here?
Ah.
We're about 20 minutes into this project,
and we're actually doing really well.
Everything is out of the room, the carpet is up,
and the ceiling is already painted.
Jim, I need you for one minute.
My plan with these wires is to bring them up, okay?
So, they're all three of them up there.
I'm gonna come up into the closet, cut a hole,
Okay.
And we'll be good to go.
All right, how long is that gonna take you?
Uh, half an hour.
But these will be out of your way, like, right now.
I'm gonna call Amy now and let her know
we're at the restaurant.
Hey, will you talk for me?
It's Jill. Hold on.
Hey, Jill. It's Amy and Andy.
We're at the restaurant. We made it.
They're inside right now.
For the reservation,
or are the other people that they're going to meet there,
are they already there?
They have not arrived yet.
They have not arrived yet. That is fantastic.
We love to hear that.
That is good.
MATTHEWS: That's awesome, Andy.
Come on.
Did you find anything, or is it looking good,
other than all those wires?
All these wires, yep.
Gina?
MATTHEWS: Hi, Gina.
I'm Amy.
Jim.
Nice to meet you. Jim Huber.
So, basically, what we're doing --
we're gonna put down Microllam in right here.
In that cavity over there,
we'll put our trimmers down into the plate,
and then right in that cavity over there
will be trimmers down to the plate.
The other couple things we got going are cosmetic.
They're around the window here.
Nothing structural.
Do you have the plans?
Yes, I do.
Plans and permits, right here.
And that is gonna be open guard rail...
Yep.
...once the wall is removed.
Okay, great.
You can find a comfortable place, and...
Here.
All right, Amy, got to come that way.
Which way? This way?
So, we're about 15 minutes away from hour two.
The wall is coming down, the seat is going in,
the bookcases are going in back there.
We're actually about 30 minutes,
maybe 45 minutes ahead of schedule,
at this point.
So that's awesome,
except I don't want to get too cocky
because the inspector just got here
and that can change everything.
CRAIG: Well, we have a fourth one.
Oh, yeah.
'Cause if we got a fourth one, let's put it over here.
There's load on that stud.
Okay.
No. Okay, I'm gonna move.
Jim!
No, you cut about two inches up into it.
Go that way and I'll go this way.
Got to get around it.
Let's get a header measurement.
Good news is we're about to cut the header.
I like that.
Is it actually in there?
Oh.
Yeah, wait a second.
We got to get it in there.
[ Gasps ] We were supposed to already --
We put the freakin' temporary wall up.
I'm gonna go talk to Jim for a second.
You got it.
What?
How are we getting the header in here?
Are we gonna be able to maneuver here?
Okay, this is really bad.
The one thing we learned from our dry run
is that we had to bring the header in
and get it in place before we put the temp walls up,
and we can't take those temp walls out
because they are literally holding up the whole load
of the second story of the house.
We might be kind of screwed.
Is that even?

if we can get another 90 minutes out of you.
Like, 10:45?
Yep.
Okay.
Perfect.
43 1/2. Like, now.
[ Cellphone rings ]
Hey, Jill.
I just got off the phone with Amanda,
and she can definitely be in there till 10:45.
She said no problem.
Is that, like, a guarantee?
It's a guarantee.
That's great, Jill. Thanks for the good news.
All right, we got an extra 30 minutes, you guys.
Whoo!
55 1/2, 43 1/2.
I can remember that.
This snow ain't helping nothing.
Then there was light.
No magic line. Can't see in the dark.
55 1/4.
43 1/4. Like, yesterday. Now.
Do you have some quarter-round that's going around the base?
Great.
Tell everyone that the dining room is off limits,
and you guys can start placing furniture.
HUBER: I'll help. Anthony and I will grab the table.
Lift up still.
Let's just see if it can get in the corner.
Okay, throw something under that corner.
We'll roll it your way.
It's 10:30.
They're leaving the restaurant in 15 minutes,
so we got to hustle.
Joel, you got that 64 1/4?
[ Sighs ]
Breathe.
Looks good, doesn't it?
This is awesome.
Hi.
So, how did it look? How did we check out?
It looks awesome.
You guys did a great job.
Everything is up to code and good.
Thumbs up.
You can.
You did a wonderful job.
We got a thumbs up from Gina.
[ Cheers and applause ]
Thank you.
All right, have a good night.
[ Cellphone rings ]
Hey, Jill.
They got the check. All right.
So...
Okay.
Okay, this is cutting it really close.
Do you want to carry it with me?
All right, let's go all the way to the back.
Hey, nobody walk on it.
HUBER: You're gonna have to go up, and I'm gonna stay down.
Hey, Joel.
Wait, wait, wait. Joel's feet are soaked.
Well, we're sorry, but...
...if you want a couch, it's --
I got to push it.
Yeah, I can take it from you.
Hold on, hold on.
Okay. Take this plastic.
JILL: They're getting in the car.
He's opening the front door for Amanda.
Jeremiah's in his car.
Light's on.
MATTHEWS: And Jill's calling.
Hold on. Everybody hold on.
Hey, Jill. What's happening?
They just pulled out of the restaurant.
I'm following them right now.
So, they're coming home. That's really all I can say.
[ Indistinct conversations ]
[ Cellphone rings ]
Hey, Jill, what's happening?
I'm guessing we're 10 to 15 minutes away.
All right, I'll clear everybody out.
Okay.
All right, you guys. I need everybody cleared out.
They're gonna be here any minute.
Can I suggest you go in there?
[ Speaking indistinctly ]
What?
AMANDA: [ Gasps ]
Oh, my God.
What's happening?
[ Gasps ] Oh.
[ Chuckles ] I don't know.
[ Chuckles ]
Welcome home.
JEREMIAH: Hi.
[ Laughing ]
I'm Amy Matthews.
Hi.
And your living room just got raided.
[ Laughter ]
I have no idea what happened.
Crazy.
I hope so,
Yeah.
This gal was in on it, obviously.
And just keep in mind that it's not just your living room,
but take a look at your dining room.
Oh, my gosh! [ Laughs ]
I cannot believe
what they have done to this house.
We went to dinner,
and we came back with a new house.
Like, that doesn't happen.
That doesn't happen.
JEREMIAH: I'm just so excited.
I just can't believe
that I'm gonna wake up to this tomorrow morning.
Oh, you're good.
How many people worked on this?
Oh, my gosh!
I wanted to introduce you to all of them.
Hey, you guys. Come on down.
So, this is our team.
This is Jim.
He's in charge of the construction.
Appreciate it.
Andy.
Very nice to meet you, sir.
This is Anthony.
Jeremiah. Nice to meet you.
AMANDA: Ooh, love this.
This is -- this is so fantastic.
This is a real room now!
We can sit here!
This is the best ever.
[ Both chuckle ]
Oh, and the banister! Look at it!
I did not have any idea it would look like this.
I'm blown away. I'm absolutely blown away.
Oh, my gosh!
You guys, we have so much gratitude.
Thank you very much.
Wow! Whoa!
[ Squeals ]
[ Laughter ]
What's going on with your hair?
[ Laughter ]
Oh, my gosh.
I can't stand it!
So cool.
I still have no idea what's going on.
Everything is making sense.
Yeah! [ Chuckles ]
It's starting to make sense.
Well, I have a feeling
that you two want to get together
and enjoy your house
without all of us staring at you.
Thank you guys so much.
JEREMIAH: Thank you very much.
I love you.
I love you, too.
AMANDA: I wanted to do this
because I wanted to just make this our home.
[ Chuckles ]
JEREMIAH: The details in this house, the colors, the flow of it,
it just makes my heart just really expand.
I feel like it's really, really our house now.
Wow.
It's gonna take a while to really sink in,
which is great, because we're not going anywhere.
