Uneven skin tone comes in many forms, including dark circles under the eyes, age spots and
freckles. In many cases skin pigmentation like freckles
adds character but if you are someone who experiences unwanted skin pigmentation you
may feel self-conscious. If you’re in this position, there are a
number of actions you can take to reduce the production of skin pigmentation.
Reducing dark circles under the eyes is a concern for many men and women.
Dark circles can surface under the eyes for a number of reasons, including thinning skin.
The skin under the eye is ten times thinner than the skin on the other parts of the face.
So, as we age and the collagen in our skin breaks down, our skin thins and the blood
vessels underneath the eye start to become more visible and can appear in the shape of
dark circles. As we grow older, it is therefore important
that we initiate a skincare regime to lessen the impact that ageing has on our skin.
I recommend the use of products specifically formulated to help reduce pigmentation and
maintain skin elasticity. This can assist in slowing down the process
of dark circles developing under the eyes. Freckles develop as a result of an increase
in dark pigment called melanin. Those who are prone to freckles will find that they
appear after sun exposure. For this reason, in winter months people who
have freckles will notice that their freckles fade.
The best way to prevent the development of more freckles and the darkening of existing
freckles is to avoid exposure to the sun, and when in the sun to apply adequate skin
protection. Aside from this, if you are self-conscious
about your freckles, apply foundations and concealers to assist in covering and lightening
their appearance. Age spots, otherwise known as liver spots,
are flat brown or black spots which appear on sun exposed areas of the body.
‘Age spots,’ in reality, can develop at any age.
To minimise your chance of developing age spots, adequate sun protection must be used,
including protective clothing when out in the sun as well as the application of high
SPF sunscreen.
