If you are suffering from fatigue or exhaustion, there is hope! As is the case with any health
problem, the best approach to permanent relief is to evaluate and treat the cause. Some areas
to investigate when fatigue or exhaustion are a problem include: the quality and amount
of sleep we get, our overall stress levels, the quality of our diet, the presence of anemia,
food allergens or intolerances, nutrient deficiencies, chronic viral infections, hypothyroidism,
adrenal insufficiency, age related hormone decline, side effects of medications, difficulties
with blood sugar regulation, immune system dysregulation such as allergies or autoimmune
conditions, and mitochondrial disorders. To start with, here are 5 suggestions that can
help us all improve overall health, and therefore increase our energy levels: 1. Get enough
rest. Aim for 8 hours of sleep every night. 2. Clean up your diet. Focus on an organic
whole food diet, free of sugar, processed food and artificial additives. a. Add lots
of produce into your diet!!! b. In addition to all of your favorite ways to eat veggies,
introduce green vegetable juice into your life! Juicing our vegetables is a terrific
way to add far more vitamins, minerals and enzymes into our bodies than we could ever
possibly eat. My favorite green juice recipe is made of Cucumber, Celery, Kale, Spinach,
Parsley, Mint, Turmeric Root, Lemon, and Green Apple. I highly recommend watching the documentary
Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead, which you can find on YouTube. Individuals with medical
conditions that restrict minerals or vitamin K will need to discuss juicing with a doctor
prior to beginning. c. Next, Minimize or eliminate alcohol consumption. d. And finally, keep
high glycemic foods down to a minimum. 3. Add a high quality B complex supplement to
your daily routine. The B complex product I prescribe in my practice is called B complex
plus by Klaire labs. 4. Get some daily movement in...a 30-minute walk is a great start! 5.
Have a look at your overall stress levels and how you are coping. Think about healthy
practices that you can add to your life to effectively reduce your stress levels. Here
are a few thoughts: a. Add positive affirmations and mantras into your daily routine. Check
out the work of Louise Hay if you aren’t already familiar with how to create and use
positive affirmations. b. Add in daily joy and beauty practices. This can look like buying
yourself flowers, listening to your favorite music, exercising, or taking an art class.
Enjoy your daily life! c. Reflect upon the fact that you matter and take time to journal
daily on ways that you are succeeding in taking care of your health and happiness. Note areas
of growth you are pleased with and goals you have met. Also note areas that have been challenging
for you and brainstorm on what additional support would help you. d. Work with a therapist
who can partner with you and broaden your stress coping tool bag. A naturopathic doctor
will be able to help you evaluate and treat the cause of your fatigue and exhaustion.
