The rise in incidents of the number of people with dementia obviously is something that
we are very mindful of and it's part and parcel of the fact that we have an ageing population
and the numbers of older people are increasing world wide.
This of course is also evident in Australia and the anticipated numbers are quite significant,
we're talking about 1.13 million people in Australia with dementia by 2050, and an increase
in WA to about 125,000. Curtin University's really made a conscience
decision to establish itself as an expert in dementia and education and research, we've
done that with a number of different avenues. But one of the strongest connections that
we've made is the partnership with Alzhimers Australia WA.
So, by building on this partnership and creating this new centre of excellence in demnentia
care we can spread our influence and we can build the capacity of many other organisations
to be able to do what is nedded to be done, which is to support people who are living
with demnetia and their families and carers. Through the trajectory of the disease we're
talking about people being diagnosed at a much earlier age now and people live and die
with dementia and we need to be able to care for them appropriatley through that trajectory
experience.
