My name is Alexandra Wiren, I am from Stockholm, Sweden and I study International Hotel & Resort
Management here at the Blue Mountains International Hotel Management School.
Question: Why did you choose Blue Mountains International Hotel Management School?
I have always been very interested in travel and working and wanted to combine them all
has always been a great big part of what I wanted to do with my life. So when I went
to high school we had a university counsellor and I spoke to him and he recommended me to
come and just look the school out and see exactly if I liked it and what I didn't like
about it and I found there was very few things that I didn't like and a lot that I did like
so it was a great choice for me.
Question: Do you have many international friends?
It's the greatest part of hospitality to get to know people and to mingle with everyone around you so when I was at the Leura campus
I really found that I have that I still today have a lot of friends from everywhere.
I have a canadian friend, heaps of friends here in Australia. Really friends from everywhere
in the world and that has been a great part of the experience.
in the world and that has been a great part of the experience.
Question: What do you think of the technology available to you?
I think it's a great thing that we have it available to us. If I miss a class or even
if I need to catch up on a class or I didn't really understand what the teacher was talking
about, I can easily just go online, check out what the class was and have a look at it.
Question: What do you think is the best part of the course?
I think the fact that you really mix the theoretical
part as well as the practical. So my favourite has definitely been my time doing the practical
learning so Front Office, Kitchen, Waitressing. It's really been a great part of the learning
process that you can really take along into your working life.
Question: How do you find the placements?
That you get a quick look into the industry. You get a lot of contacts and a great network already. You really get to know if you like
the industry or not by doing the placement. I have definitely been able to quickly adapt
into a working life of a real hotel purely because I have those skills already.
Question: What are the benefits of studying in Australia?
The attitude, the people is really relaxed and you really get to experience everything
that they still have in the industry. They don't see you as a placement student so that
you have just the basic knowledge, they give you the full broad experience as an employee
and that's really good about Australia, that they have that outlook on students as being
able to do things.
Question: What are the differences between the Sydney and Leura Campuses?
Time management, a lot... Up in Leura, you
sat down and you have to do your studying, you don't have much else to do. Here in Sydney,
you really have to learn to manage your time a lot better when it comes to study because
you have to ensure that if you are working as well as studying you have to manage your
time so that you can do both easily.
