>> Well I, of course, signals runs off of the grades,
first and foremost, so we had to have a couple of quizzes
in the books before I ran it,
so I run a quiz most every week on Blackboard.
And so after the first couple of quizzes,
then I ran the first intervention, and that's the one
that had the biggest response.
And then I ran one about once a week or once every other week
for the first half of the semester.
>> Later on in the semester, I kind of changed the nature
of the signals, and then what I spent more time,
let's say we're getting ready to take the second test,
it's a reminder of support materials
that are there for the students.
So the message might be very detailed and say,
based upon your yellow signal, you might want to be sure to get
over to the study table that we've got set up for you.
>> I will say that we've had some semesters
where we've done a better job of running it than others
for different reasons, and we've seen definitely...you can see
how the students do better when they get more.
>> You know, if you waited until the second half of the semester
to say, hey, you're not doing well, by that time,
half the grades are in the books, and the chances
of actually doing something different and having them back
are less, that's right.
So I think it's definitely something you want to start
with right away, and that's how signals is advertized basically,
as a predictor of how well you're going to do
in the course given the level of effort that you're putting forth
and given the grades that you've gotten early in the semester.
So it's kind of a, what you hope it is, is a way of saying, look,
if you keep doing what you're doing, these first two weeks,
you're not going to make it in this class.
And that's, I think, the important thing.
At that point, you can...a student can turn it around,
and so I think it's important to do it at the beginning.
>> An invisible traffic light really helps them see
at a quick glance how they're doing.
The email coming into their inbox, you know,
they see that we have noticed and are paying attention,
they're getting an email from me saying, you're doing great
or you're not doing as well,
and getting that multiple times throughout the semester.
It's much more valuable than if they just got a word
or two from us.
