Mecenat Chirurgie Cardiaque is a wonderful association
one that I created with Professor Francine Leca and a team of surgeons.
It brings children with heart defects to France from countries
that don’t have the infrastructure to provide the care they need.
We take a child who is very sick, sometimes even dying,
and completely transform him.
Surgical intervention lets us turn a suffering child
into one that can lead a normal life.

Heart surgery is very expensive.
We operate in Paris as well as in several other cities.
In these cities we have heart surgery centers,
where each operation costs €12,000 on average.
It involves exchange, authorization, paperwork...
and then organizing transport with our friends at Aviation Without Borders.
Now our operations are well established and functioning smoothly...
1. Identify the children 2. Organizing their arrival in France 3. Their stay with a host family
4. Surgical intervention 5. Convalescence and the return home
This is where the host family comes in,
an essential part of the care we provide.
The host family picks up the child at the airport,
and, during 1.5 or 2 months, takes care of the child as its own.
The children find themselves in a happy, familial context.
This time includes medical consultations every few weeks,
to make sure that everything is going well.
“Do you hear that?”
"Yes"
"It’s your heart that’s beating."
"It’s beating well, isn’t it!"
"Nice and regular"
"Your little heart is working well.”
When these children arrive in France, they can barely breathe.
Without surgery, they would die...
and I find it just wonderful to see them leave again 6 to 8 weeks later,
cured, able to play football or go biking.
Have a heart so they can have one too!
