Today's Kodak is a technology company focused on Imaging for Business...
At Kodak, we are building on our technological heritage to serve the fast-growing packaging,
functional and digital printing markets, as well as established markets in graphics and
entertainment. Kodak is a company that is strong, and continues
to maintain our global reach. So what makes Kodak the company it is today?
Headquartered in Rochester, New York, we have development and manufacturing sites across
the globe. Supported by some 8,000 employees globally
in four operating regions, Kodak and its extended team of channel partners serve more than 25,000
customers, with Kodak products available in more than 150 countries, worldwide.
What we do for businesses Kodak can help customers achieve results that
other companies can't come close to matching. Our portfolio of products is organized into
two segments: - Digital Printing & Enterprise; and,
- Graphics, Entertainment & Commercial Films
Commercial printers and publishers use Kodak solutions from both segments to produce the
magazines, newspapers and books you read, as well as advertisements, bills and other
documents you receive in the mail.
Our digital printing technologies empower customers to personalize materials for readers
in different locations, or with different interests... or, they can print short runs
of books and other materials as needed. This "on-demand" printing eliminates the need to
store large inventories of materials that may go out-of-date before being used.
Packaging Printers use Kodak products to help them to create eye-catching packaging for
groceries, electronics and other goods you see on store shelves.
Manufacturers and other businesses look to Kodak for help with a variety of image-related
needs. One exciting example is the emerging market for functional printing -- that is,
printing products that have a functional, versus visual, purpose. Currently, Kodak is
entering this market with partnerships to manufacture metal mesh films used in touch-screen
sensors for smart phones, tablets and pc's. Packaging, digital printing and functional
printing represent markets transitioning to newer technology. These provide substantial
opportunities for growth. In established markets such as Graphics and
Entertainment, we have a large market presence that generates substantial revenue. While
these markets are not growing overall, we apply technologies that improve profitability.
Our Graphics business includes printing plates and the "platesetting" equipment used to image
the plates with information and pictures to be printed.
Our KODAK SONORA Process Free Plates yield dramatic environmental and economic benefits
for customers without sacrificing quality and output. This is accomplished by eliminating
the use of processing chemicals and large amounts of water when being imaged.
We also offer Software that helps automate the flow of work through a print shop -- from
receiving and preparing jobs, through scheduling and printing them.
We also continue to provide leading films for the motion picture and advertising industries,
as well as for surveillance, Printed Circuit Board manufacturing and other specialty uses.
In the motion picture business, we have film supply contracts with all six of the leading
movie studios. Beyond our product portfolio, we also generate
revenue by licensing our widely recognized and respected Kodak name for use on select
consumer products and in markets where we, as a company, do not market our own products.
To maintain our brand's reputation, we carefully choose partners who provide quality, technology
solutions -- including picture kiosks, cameras, batteries, and lenses -- to carry the Kodak
name.
As we enter this new chapter for Kodak, a technology company focused on imaging for
business. We are serving customers with disruptive technologies and breakthrough solutions.
With a long heritage in materials science, digital imaging science, and deposition processes
(which means precisely coating thin layers and macroscopic or microscopic patterns on
substrates), Kodak can help customers achieve results that other vendors can't come close
to matching. One example is our Kodak Stream commercial
inkjet technology -- the basis for our family of KODAK PROPSER Systems. Take a deep breath.
In that time, roughly 2.4 seconds, a PROSPER Press could have printed a 260-page novel.
That's more than six times faster than other digital offerings in the industry.
Also notable is our SQUARESPOT Imaging Technology, this patented, laser-writing technology is
used in a range of Kodak products that image plates and proofing materials used in commercial
printing. Specifically, the SQUARESPOT technology produces the dots used to reproduce an image.
The precision and shape of the dots determines the clarity (or image quality) of the printed
image. Plates made with SQUARESPOT technology not only produce images up to two and a half
times sharper, their durability enables printing of large quantities.
In the future, this same technology will have uses beyond printing text and graphics. It
will enhance the printing of circuitry, smart packaging and other functional products.
A third example is our expertise in continuous manufacturing, which we perfected through
decades of leadership in coating emulsions onto rolls of film. These continuous, additive
and subtractive deposition methods enable production of high-tech products more quickly
and inexpensively than making them in batches. In addition to manufacturing of touch-screen
sensors mentioned earlier, similar methods can be extended to other forms of printed
electronics or printed sensors for smart packaging applications.
Finally, Kodak is pursuing partner opportunities to expand its business in products and markets
we would not pursue alone.
With our strong technology in the commercial imaging space, we are an attractive partner
to leading firms looking to distinguish their solutions from the competition.
We already have several key partnerships in place.
A leading producer of book presses has already integrated our Stream technology into the
world's fastest and widest digital inkjet press for producing black-and-white trade
and textbooks.
We are also working with companies looking to incorporate Stream technology into new
packaging printing solutions that will move that industry forward.
In Functional Printing, we have agreements with two technology firms around manufacturing
touch-screen sensors. Each is pursuing a different Kodak technology for their offering.
And... the list will grow as we move forward. Overall, such collaborations extend the use
of Kodak technologies into new applications, and will expand our business for the future.
It's an exciting time for Kodak and its customers as we further develop and unleash new technologies
to the marketplace, extend Kodak's reputation as a respected and ethical company into the
commercial space, and work with leading companies to break new ground with up-and-coming solutions.
