Clearing a Student Test Attempt

Blackboard allows you to clear a test attempt allowing a student to retake a test. For example, if a student encountered technical problems and only partially completed a test, you may wish to clear the grade to allow the student to retake the test. There are a couple of ways to clear a student's attempt at a test in Blackboard. From the Control Panel, click Grade Center and select the Smart View of your choice OR you can select Full Grade Center. In this example, we'll select the Test Smart View which will take us to a view of all the tests in the Grade Center. Let's look at the Unit 2 quiz from our sample student, Christopher Guest. You'll notice in the cell for the Unit 2 quiz grade, there's an icon with a paper and a pencil. If you look at the Icon Legend, we can see that this icon represents an attempt in progress. You will see this pencil and paper icon when a student is currently working on a test OR when one has encountered technical difficulties which prevented them from completing the test. There are a couple of ways to clear this test attempt. The first way to click on the Action link and find the word Attempt at the bottom with a date and the same icon. Clicking the word Attempt will take you to a page with detailed information about the student's test attempt. On this page, look for and click the words Test Information. This will expand down several options. Toward the button, click the Clear Attempt button. Your student now should be able to retake this test. Let's return to the Grade Center for another way to clear an attempt in progress. Find the cell with the icon, click the Action link, and choose View Grade Details. On the Grade Details page, scroll down and look under the heading Actions. Here, you will see another button for Clear Attempt. Next, click Clear Attempt. A warning message will appear. Simply click OK to continue. This attempt has now been cleared. You'll notice when the screen refreshes, the information that was here under the Attempts tab is gone. Additionally, this action by the instructor has been recorded in the Grade History. You can see this information by clicking on the Grade History tab. To return to the Grade Center, click Return to Grade Center at the bottom of the page or select the "breadcrumbs" at the top. You'll notice back in the Grade Center view, the attempt in progress icon has been cleared for our sample student Christopher Guest under Unit 2 quiz. This student can now attempt to retake his quiz. Please keep in mind that clearing an attempt will completely delete the student's saved answers and score for this attempt at this test. Also, if you cleared a grade that had a previous attempt, the previous attempt is now the current grade.
