The Herring Gull is the commonest gull over most of eastern Canada. It can be identified by its
black wing tips and pink legs.
It nests on the ground or on cliffs like these. An adult
herring gull may have a wing spread of over 4 and a half feet. Although it preys on the
eggs and young of other water birds, it's a very useful scavenger in our seaports. It's often
seen in great numbers in plowed fields well inland, where it feeds on cutworms and other
insect pests. For a more complete story of the herring gull, why not contact the Canadian
Wildlife Service in Ottawa.
