As I thought over the TEACH 8 element of Maximizing instructional time I considered the different
strategies I use to make my classroom effective.
Initially, as students enter into my classroom I have an activity such as a journal or blog
prompt for them to complete first thing. This allows some time for the students to refocus,
as well as allows opportunity for me to take attendance and answer any questions from the
previous class.
Each day I place my learning objectives or LoLo's as well as the class agenda on the
board so the students know the summary of what we are going to cover and the order of
how we are going to cover it in class.
Often I want my students working together collaboratively doing many different activities. The use of
the timer keeps both the students and myself accountable to the task at hand. By posting
it on the board using the iPad we are able to complete the task in a timely manner and
continue onto our next part without having to refocus the class.
Finally, to allow students to stay active in their discussion I will give them 30 second
talk times where they will discuss the next topic we will cover in the lesson. Normally
I use this as a transition strategy to help student's transfer their thoughts to new ideas.
