Erik: What do you find most challenging about recording an album?
Conrad: Everything is very challenging about recording an album. A challenge that's unique
to recording an album is knowing when to stop. Because you can come with a lot of ideas.
You can come with song A, and you can have all these ideas, and we wanna do this on this,
so we wanna throw this on, and we wanna overdub this and overdub that, and we have this neat
sound which will work well here, but when do you stop? Great artists know when to stop,
when to pull stuff away. Think of your favorite song. Think of a great
song, and you can almost always in your head, as you're listening, say -- if you were given
the task of like 'how about a different like part on this song?' You could, because great
songs generally are structured well enough that, you know, you can throw stuff on there,
but the trick is that they didn't, and it sounds better when it's left to the listener's
imagination, when there's a space there.
