Hi. I'm Brenda Thompson, registered dietitian and owner of Life Skills Nutrition. In this
segment, I'm going to talk about cholesterol found on the food label. If you want to find
out about the amount of cholesterol in the food that you are consuming, you want to look
here under "cholesterol." This food contains zero milligrams of cholesterol. Cholesterol
is a waxy substance found in animal products and it's recommended that no one consumes
more than three hundred milligrams per day. If you look here at the food guide pyramid,
cholesterol is not found in grains, vegetables or fruits. It is found in some oils that are
made from animal sources such as butter and lard. Also, it's found in milk and other dairy
products. And, it's definitely found in meats. So choosing lean meats with no skin on the
poultry is a great way to decrease your cholesterol. Also, eating poultry that is white meat instead
of dark meat is another great way to decrease the cholesterol. Decreasing your cholesterol
in your diet helps prevent against heart disease and also complications associated with diabetes
and keeps people healthy in the long run.
