The first step to figuring out if the thyroid is functioning fine or not is actually doing
a blood test. The usual way of looking at that blood test is counter-intuitive because
that blood test is a little bit more complex and needs to be looked at in a different way.
It's an inverse relationship to the amount of thyroid hormone so that blood test we call
the TSH, thyroid-stimulating hormone. If it's abated, it means that the thyroid is not working
hard enough, and if it's suppressed that means the thyroid is producing too much hormone
and that sometimes confuses patients because they think the thyroid is overacting if you
have a high TSH and it's not.
