In this video we're going to look at
working with multiple drawings in AutoCAD
were also were look at switching between drawings
and the ability to share information from one drawings to another So let's go
ahead and open up a some drawings
Go to the open command
and here i'm going to select
multiple files
you can select files by holding down the CTRL key
and AutoCAD will allow you to select multiple files
or you could hold down the SHIFT key
and select a consecutive list of files
however and this example will go to work
with two files
I'm going to hold down the CTRL key and selecting these two files
and click on open
and that you can see AutoCAD has the two drawings open
to organize these and the application
we need to go to the view tab
over on the right hand side there are several tools for
adjusting your windows. There is cascading
tile vertically, tile horizontally.
it is common to use tile vertically.
so that we can see both drawings at the same time
as you're working with multiple drawings
the active window is the darker of the two windows
as you switch drawings the AutoCAD command-line will update to match the
drawing that you are working in.
so it's a good ideal
to get familiar with
how to work with multiple drawings
because it's common for us to do that
in AutoCAD
In this section we're going to look at a feature called drag and drop.
and copy and paste
within AutoCAD
you can drag and drop objects
into the drawing
to use drag-and-drop
you need to select an object
left click on it
and then you want to left click and hold on the object
and as you do that you want to drag the objects
to where you want to move them
this is typically what i would call
free form move
it's just drag-and-drop
there's no snapping no precision
you mainly just want to drag the objects
to the area let you want to use them
later on you can use the move command and add a little accuracy to drawing
one of the nice features of drag-and-drop
is you can drag-and-drop objects across drawings.
For example if you needed a
piano in this drawing
and there's not one
you can click on this drawing and
drag-and-drop the piano in the other drawing
and you'll notice that it actually changes color because
both drawings have the same layer
they just happen to have different colors
so this is a drag and drop between drawings
now AutoCAD has several drag-and-drop
options that were going to be review
for example
if you drag-and-drop and hold the right mouse button down
you can make a copy
of the object
by selecting copy here from the shortcut menu
another way to make a copy
is while you are dragging and dropping with your left mouse button
you can hold on your CTRL key or just tap it
and AutoCAD or make a copy
so to do a copy drag-and-drop with the left mouse button
and hold on the CTRL key
or drag-and-drop and hold down the right mouse button
and it will give you a shortcut menu to copy
We can also use a feature called
copy and paste
but say for example you wanted to
copy this piano
over to the other drawing
and you want it in the exact same location
in in relationship to these two walls
so i could select this piano
right click
and select Clipboard
there's a command called copy with base point.
if i select copy with base point
i can
assigned this corner as my base point
let me turn on Object Snap (OSNAP)
and turn on ENDPOINT
i can select the endpoint of this wall
now when i go to this point
I right click and
select paste from the shortcut menu.
and paste that piano
in the exact same location
in relationship to the two walls
and we also have our standard copy and paste
if you know the shortcut keys its CTRL+C for copy
and CTRL+Vfor paste.
so if i press CTRL+V
i can copy
the piano
anywhere i want
in in a drawing
i can switch back to this drawing
and make a copy
While you're using copy and paste
you can also copy these objects
to other applications like PowerPoint or Word
and and that's the basic ways
of sharing content from one drawing or another you can use
drag-and-drop
or you can use copy and paste
now when we use the copy and paste
AutoCAD
automatically assigns the base point
in the lower left hand corner
of the objects that you select for example
the topic these two objects to copy and paste
I'm going to press CTRL+C
copy to the clipboard then press CTRL+V
AutoCAD will use the lower left corner
of those objects determines
the outermost
edges and uses the lower left for copy and paste
earlier i've showed you the copy with base point option
you would use that to add a little precision to your drawing
