imagine the power of having torn down the walls that separate the traditional silos
between health protection and fitness programs and wellness programs and nutrition and HR
and benefits programs. If all of them can work together, if we can avoid duplication
of services, if we can look at each and every activity that each does through the lens of
what's best for the overall health of the worker at work and away from work. I think
we can have a better investment of resources. Practically, this looks like, fairly complex.
But there are a few early, simple steps that almost every employer can take. For instance,
having your safety committee and your health promotion committee meet together on a regular
basis. Having the leadership of both talk about their plans for the year and coordinate
them to the extent possible. Taking every safety meeting or health promotion meeting
and dedicating a portion of that experience to the opposite side. So imagine and all hand
meeting that is held on a regular basis and talks about safety issues, take on some health
promotion information at the same time, and vice versa, if you have typically educational
materials around health promotion, fold in ways to keep people healthy at work. And then
the last thing I would say is, organizational change is powerful in achieving both health
protection and health promotion aims, so think big picture. Talk about the policies that
your organization needs, talk about ways that you can change the physical environment, the
culture of the workplace, the built environment, these are all powerful ways to integrate health
protection and health promotion.
