Alan>> Hi, I’m Alan. After graduating
from uni in 2009 I applied and got the job of press assistant at Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
And I worked right through until September, and I absolutely loved it, after that I went
back into the dark depths of retail for the winter but I knew by then that I had the bug
and that I’d found what I really wanted to do. In the March I applied for programme
production, and I was a programme production assistant all the way through, and then I
rejoined the media team as a media accreditation officer. That ran right through to the September
and because of that I was then able to apply and I got my full time job at the Edinburgh
Playhouse, as well as that I’m now doing a show at the festival Fringe, which I’d
never have had the confidence to do. So I’m now the producer and playwright of Fetch at
the Greenside venue. Keep an eye on the Fringe website, it’s a great website, really easy
to use, and keep an eye on the vacancies section because you’d be surprised how early jobs
go on. Programme production jobs could go on as early as February or even late January,
so keep an eye on them because there’s so many different departments, there’s so many
places you could work for the Fringe. Just keep an eye out all year round because from
February to August they’re looking for people. I would say anyone who’s thinking about
getting a job for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, just do it. Any department. There’s such
a wide range of jobs you can get, from media to the admin team to the arts industry team
to the street events team who work so hard all summer. There’s so many areas you’ll
find one area that interests you and speaking as someone who caught the Fringe bug I’ve
got it and I love it, best thing I ever did.
