My name is Jason Bagwell - I'm department chair of Horticulture.
My name is Jeannette Robison. I'm a graduate of the Horticulture Technology study program
here at Spartanburg Community College.
My name is Trevor Stamey. I'm in the Horticulture Department working on getting an associates
degree in Horticulture at Spartanburg Community College.
The students learn hands on landscape management, turf grass management, irrigation, greenhouse
production, nursery production and many aspects of this industry.
In looking at various colleges, I chose Spartanburg Community College and specifically their Horticulture
department because I did a little bit of research and realized how valuable their instructors
were.
The instructors here are amazing. A lot of them grew up in this and they just know the
kind of knowledge you can get from experience.
Here at Spartanburg Community College we have a recognized arboretum, the National Arboreta
Society arboreta are a collection of trees and plants for the purpose of education, and
that's what we are all about.
There is some lab work but it's mostly outside, hands on activity doing stuff.
They help you to take appropriate surveys, to learn how to take soil samples, to learn
how to prune at proper time, learn all sorts of management skills, when to fertilize, when
to take care of your plants and when to let them be, how much to water... Everything is
so technical and so well explained that it's very helpful.
Most graduates tend to go to work straight out of the two year program. We do have some
that will transfer to Clemson, but most take jobs. We have requests from the coast area
all the way up through Columbia, Charlotte, Asheville and everything in between.
The Horticulture Technology Program helped me develop the skills that I needed to enter
the industry of horticulture and landscape design and management.
Horticulture is one of the largest industries in the United States - it is one of the largest
contributors to the state of South Carolina and the opportunities are great and varied,
and students can typically find jobs somewhere in this industry doing something they are
really interested in.
I would recommend the Horticulture Program here to anyone who wants to increase their
knowledge about landscape because there is more to it than just cutting grass. It really
is a science.
If you're considering a career in horticulture, landscaping, nursery management or landscape
management, I would definitely recommend the Horticulture Technology Program at Spartanburg
Community College.
