Hello, I’m Deep, I’m studying architecture at Kingston University. This is our campus
here at Knight’s Park, one of the four campuses at the university. This is our art shop! And
I’ll just go through my day to day process [Chat to course friend]
Anyway, I’m going to go through my general day to day life at the uni today, show you
a few places and what I’m doing. Why I chose Kingston University. It was probably
one of my first choices and it was one of the universities that had architecture (the
course I wanted to do) and it was in London. Also, it’s quite close to home and has a
lot of facilities which I’ll kinda take you through during my little tour today. So...
So this is our library at the Knight’s Park campus. There are three libraries in university.
This one has just been refurbished and it’s become a really good space to do work and
carry out research and then studies and things to do. This large open space accommodates
computers and group study sessions. Where the smaller space on the left here contains
all the books and I’ll walk you through this space in a moment when I explain how
this function works. This is the quiet side of the library. This
is where all the books, journals, dissertations and digital copies of things are housed. You
can find almost anything that you want in here. Oh look! My friend’s still here, working
hard as always. So next I’m going to take you guys to the architecture workshop.
So this is our workshop, one of the best workshops in the country where we make models, drafts
– the kinda things we need to make. Have a look. They have all kinds of things here,
from woodwork, metalwork, bronze casting, plastics. There’s a bunch of architecture
students making a spire. Working hard! I’m going in the studio now, see you inside.
So, this is my studio, and currently we’re having a tutorial which we sit down with one
or two of the tutors and just go through the work which we might have done during the week
before or the week now. We discuss the things we’ve drawn or done and how that’s helped
us and they suggest ideas they might have. OK guys, this is my Top Tips session for you.
The first thing I’d recommend all of you to go to as many Open Days as you can. All
the universities you might be interested in or think you might apply to go to the Open
Days to help you decide where you want to study. See if you can speak to the students
there, the tutors and they’ll give you much more inside knowledge for what it’s like
to study that specific course rather than looking in prospectuses and online. It will
give you a much better understanding what the facilities are like, what the tutors are
like; how the course is structure, resources available at the university and all that kind
of stuff. Going to Open Days will be a big deciding point, so make sure you go.
When you start uni, some people think it’s quite a daunting thing: you don’t know anyone,
but actually everyone’s in the same boat. No one knows anyone, we’re all here to make
friends, so the best thing you can do is join clubs and societies, go to events (events
the Student Union might be running) and that’s the best way to get to know people, get to
know people on a similar course to you, or interested in the things you’re interested
in. And that will just make it that little bit easier when you start studying, so you
can take time out and just go out with your friends.
My main motto for you guys is to work hard so you can play even harder. Deep signing out.
