The BrakeAway Cruise Control versus the Kuryakyn ISO Grip and the Show Chrome Accessories Comfort
Grip.
Welcome to this week's Cruiser Customizing Brake Away vs ISO Grip tip of the week.
The BrakeAway Cruise Control is the leader in the industry when it comes to putting a
manual cruise control into your motorcycle. If the BrakeWay isn't for you, the Universal
cruise control from Vista Cruise can be used for just about every make and model of the
motorcycle.
Rumor has it that the BrakeAway cruise control is impossible to install to a Kuryakyn ISO
Grip or the ShowChrome accessories comfort grip. I beg to differ. As you can see here
ShowChrome accessories comfort grip, you can slide this BrakeAway, gently over the rubber
bumpers all the way to the end, and installation is then fairly simple. With the ISO Grip,
the story's a little bit different. Take a look.
Will my BrakeAway mount on my Kuryakyn ISO Grip? Now the question comes because the rubber
pads are so thick. Inside the BrakeAway package, there's justice right here. And you're gonna
have the essential allen keys and screws that you're gonna need. You have a little banding.
You have some spacing straps in case you need to space the BrakeAway, Now let's get started
by removing these four screws. Alright now, we've got these four screws removed.
With those 4 screws off we can take the teeny cap off, this is gonna give us access to the
4 screws inside. Now the imperative part here is to be able to have access to this so we
can back them out, flip this over the grip, and reset them. I'm gonna back these set screws,
all of the 4 them out, until we have a flush surface on the inside of this ring.
The key to getting this BrakeAway to slip to the ISO Grip? Lots of soapy water.
Now the one thing that you may want to pay attention to is the training edge in each
of these rubber pads. Now, if I slide this BrakeAway all the way over, what's gonna happen
is when it sits at the very end, these set screws don''t have anything to bite on inside.
So, before we do that, we're gonna find the appropriate size rubber trip out of the package.
We're gonna go ahead and line that up inside the BrakeAway.
With the soapy water, I'm gonna lube the grip.
Now, I'll take the BrakeAway, and manuever it gently, over each of the rubber pads. I'll
put more soap and water.
Perfect. Now,we're gonna through one of the set screws.
Now, we have the BrakeAway firmly attached to the grip. Now, you notice i didn't clean
all of the water and moisture of the grip. We're gonna still sip this over the grip as
well.
Now, let me teach you a really perfect trick here. What I'm gonna do is I'm gonna take
this ring over. I'm gonna pull it at the bottom, and then I'm gonna use my thumb to compress
this rubber pad, as I pull the ring up and over. I can do the same thing at the bottom.
As you can see, this particular part is the tedious process, but this unit does work with
Kuryakyn ISO Grip.
I'm gonna go ahead and move this ring, so it's about halfway. I'm gonna push down the
top which will give me the distance. Or release to be able to bottom the piece over.
Once the bottom piece is over, I can have a little bit of room, so I can get the top
part to rubber hump just like that. Now we are on the homestretch. Make sure that my
screwholes are lined up. Now at the bottom, now, here we are, on the homestretch. We're really
close right here. So what I'm gonna do now is grab one of my screws here, make sure all
of the holes are still positioned in the right place. Take the screw, start it in here. Then
I'll work my way around this grip.
And look at that. We have now successfully installed a BrakeAway cruise control.
Next step in the installation is just to remove the 10mm nut. It's on the bottom of this brake
lever. Alright. How the BrakeAway functions is it comes up and really attaches to the
bolt that holds the brake lever. I'll try to find you a good angle on exactly what's
happening infront of the camera. As you can see here, where my finger is, I'm gonna slide
the new extender in, and that's gonna get me much closer to this lever, and then we're
gonna take the original stopper, set it here on top. And now, we're gonna screw this into
the bottom side. Now what we have this piece attached loosely so it can still slide like
so, I'm gonna go ahead this back to the lever, position this on where it's gonna be, and
kick off the BrakeAway.
Now we got that set, the position's I'm gonna want. I'll go ahead and tighten this down.
I'm gonna make sure this bolt and this screw and this one here are all loose. I'm gonna
set this up to my brake lever, and attach that nut.
From there I'm gonna start tightening everyone of this joints so that I know that I have
the perfect alignment. I will cut here to the center. I'm gonna tight this bolt to the
end. And last but not least, I got this height adjuster.
After making all these adjustments, the BrakeAway is completely locked. I'm gonna release it
by hitting the front brake lever. Here we have the full throttle operation. Twise the
grip at the end of the place, kick it off with the brake lever.
Now you got it. The BrakeAway Cruise Control from Kuryakyn ISO Grip. You can twist the
grip, lock it in place, hit it with the brake lever, or twist the grip, lock it in place,
and kick it off with brake lever.
Thank you for watching Cruiser Customizing Tip of the Week where we showed you the BrakeAway
being installed in a Kuryakyn ISO Grip. Until next week, take care, and ride safe.
