We are in Malacca right now and it is night time, so we are about to head over to Jonker
Street where they have one of the biggest night markets I have ever seen. It is a great
place to find food and go shopping. Let's head over there.
One of the best ways to explore Melaka is early in the morning to take your bike. A
lot of guest houses have them and just explore all around especially the Chinatown area.
One of the reasons I'm loving Malacca so far is the crumbling colonial architecture. A
lot of the buildings along the main road have been restored. Once you start biking down
the back alleys you see places like this.
We have our tickets in hand and tonight we are going to be doing the Melaka river cruise.
This city really lights up at night.
I'm really enjoying this right now because I've actually only walked along this area.
I've never taken the boat and I've never done this at night. This is awesome.
We are going to take a rickshaw tour around Malacca next. It is quite decorated rickshaw
isn't it? Why don't you hop in? Comfy? Yes.
Can you honk that for us?
We're going on an hour long tour here. It cost 40 Ringgit, which is approximately 13
USD. Not the cheapest but it is going to be a really fun way to go around and see Melaka.
Yes and our rickshaw is all decked out with flowers and bling bling and it looks pretty.
This is one of the stops along our rickshaw tour and this place is called Porta De Santiago.
We've got
fantastic views from up here. As you can see behind there is some really unique looking
architecture.
It is extremely hot this afternoon and there is only one way to beat the heat. I'd say
it is about Cendol time.
Here we have our delicious treat. We are having Cendol right now and it is a dessert that
is really popular in Southeast Asia. It is made using shaved ice, palm sugar and it has
some coconut milk and little green worm like creatures that are actually made using rice.
And beans. That is it.
In the Chinatown area of Malacca there are a lot of different temples to explore. Here
we are going to take a look at Cheng Hoon Teng temple, which celebrates a number of
different faiths - Confucianism, Taoism and Chinese Buddhism. Let's go in.
It is lunchtime here in Malacca, so we're about to go to a Baba-Nyonya type of restaurant,
which is a mix of Chinese and Malaysian cuisine. This is a real hole in the wall kind of place.
It is.
I am going to be showing you a Nonya Laksa, which is a spicy curry with a mixture of Malay
and Chinese elements. Let's take a look here. It is coconut based curry soup and it is has
curd puffs, fish sticks, shrimp and clams added to it. It is very flavorful.
What I'm having next is called Rojak. That is the Malay word for mixture. It is a refreshing
salad. Take a look over here. It is made using fruits and vegetables, so it has pineapple,
cucumbers, bean sprouts. It is just a really nice refreshing salad on a hot day. Oh yeah.
The last of our four dishes is called Popiah. It is a spring roll that has an outside like
a crepe. I'll show you the ingredients here. It has a sweet bean and soy sauce. It often
has turnips, bean sprouts, omelet, carrots, lettuce, tofu and peanuts on top. It has got
everything going on. Take a bite. Classy.
Melaka is known for its colonial architecture, so right now we're going to take you down
some of the back alleys to show you some of the crumbling buildings and old mansions.
For those visiting Malacca, one of the best free things you can possibly do is to take
a walk along
the Malacca River.
Melaka gets really hot during the day, so we've decided to get up early. It is only
eight in the morning and we're going to do some exploring along
the river.
If you continue walking upstream you will come to an area that is just covered in graffiti
and street art. Look over here.
