Hello, I’m Andrew Bloeser. I’ll be teaching POLS 100 Intro to American Government in the
spring. This course is designed to introduce students at a rigorous college level to the
basics of American government and politics. The course will start out by talking about
what we mean by democracy and what our role in it might be as citizens. We’ll then move
on to discuss major institutions of American politics, the Constitution, Congress, the
Presidency, the Courts, and how these institutions took shape and how they affect us today. We’ll
then move on to think about some of the processes that happen in these institutions and what
leads some political actors to win or lose in these institutions. And, finally, we’ll
conclude the course by coming back to where we started by thinking about what kind of
democracy we have, what kind of democracy we might need, and how we might be able to
create change as citizens.
