There's at least one assignment at SCC that asks you to compare conditions in various
neighborhoods, and one way to do that would be to see how many liquor stores and bars
you find in various neighborhoods. So I'm going to show you how to get information about
active liquor licenses in a particular zip code.
This kind of information is provided by California's Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control.
To find that we just Google "California ABC."
When we get to that website, we can click "eServices."
Next, click "Reports."
You can see there are various ways to get information here. If we just want to find
out what liquor licenses have been issued in a particular zip code, we can go down the
page to the "Ad Hoc Reports" section and select "Query by County, Zip Code and and License
Type".
Then you choose your county and the zip code you want to find out about.
Next, you can see there are a lot of different kinds of liquor licenses. If you want to find
out how many bars and liquor stores there are, you have to do them one at a time. You
can start by choosing "On-Site Retail License". That will bring us both restaurants and bars.
You can then go through the business names, and it's pretty easy to tell which ones are
more food-oriented and which are more about serving liquor.
Then, if we want to find out about liquor stores, we can choose "Off-Site Retail Licenses".
This will show us grocery stores and liquor stores.
You'll see that Raley's is there, but also convenience stores such as AM/PM, and liquor
stores.
