>>Naoko One of my friends who is a TU alum, she lost her grandfather in the disaster.
My other friend, who is a Japanese teacher, her grandparents are also in Fukushima and
she had no idea because they don't talk about it.
>> Jack Yeah, they didn't say a thing. For me, they're busy going through personally,
this tragedy in their personal lives. When I did find out the personal difficulties that
were being faced by these two very sweet, kind women in particular, I really felt a
need to do something to make some kind of gesture. Being a musician, that was just where
I kind of found myself turning. Okay, maybe I can create some kind of song, some kind
of message of hope or encouragement and maybe a couple people will hear it and it will help
them. >>Naoko Then Satoru Satoki, he's a musician,
and he writes and sings songs and I introduced them, briefly introduced him to Jack. And
>>Jack Literally like a thirty second introduction. >>Naoko>> And he was like, oh, it would be
cool if he can record something here. You know, that kind of must have remain in my
brain somewhere, like, oh this could be news for this fundraising project.
>>Jack Maybe >>Naoko Music kind of goes beyond language
and a lot of differences that you have. So I thought having this music as a sort of to
encourage people in Japan, even Japanese people here who were affected, I thought it was a
really nice method. >> Jack I developed a basic sort of music
idea. I had an idea of maybe what I wanted the melody to be, passed the track off to
Satoru and he wrote his own melody, came up with secondary melodies, obviously all of
the lyrics and obviously the whole process was really, really a lot of fun even though
most of it was done via email or Facebook message, it was very, very moving for me to
hear some of that stuff played back and the melodies that Satoru came up with to accompany
my basic rhythm track, they were so much better than I could have ever imagined. In English,
we're calling it Song of Rising. In Japanese, it's Fukkatsu No Uta.
