Hi, I am Noah Kadre and this is my first attempt at doing a VLOG and also as a master’s student
so please forgive me for any mediocrity that may occur. I am going to discuss YouTube in
Education today, there are some pros and cons. One of the greatest things about YouTube is
that it offers an outlet for self-expression. This is a potential interaction that can occur
across geographical barriers, age barriers, socio- economic barriers, and many other things.
So there is much opportunity for YouTube in education to really allow for people to relate
to one another and share their experiences in life, that has not necessarily been a possibility
before. As we saw in geriatric1927, an elderly gentleman,
sort of broke the age barrier of the commonly known “youthful” YouTube and became one
of the most popular posters of VLOG and online content on that website. Another one of the
great points I believe YouTube has in education, is that it offers a pool of education. Through
creating educational content one may learn from a teacher that they would not normally
be able to learn from. Someone from another country, someone from another distinguished
university, there is just unlimited potential in this to create a vast resource of educational
programs that people may benefit from. Another thing I see with YouTube is moving
forward in universal access and digital literacy. That’s where through certain things like
the public library system and the increase of computers in school, more and more people
are being available, are having available these resources that you wouldn’t necessarily
need to have money to do. And this is really important. With the increase of online tutorials
and other programs we really could focus on making it universally accessible for people
to post on YouTube and express themselves and also relate to other people through comments
and sharing VLOGs and other forms of media. There are some cons to YouTube in education,
obviously, anyone could post anything and until it would be maybe flagged for removal
there is still the possibility of distasteful and non-socially accepted content that may
be posted and seen by children of all ages. And having a five-year-old daughter, this
is a very tenuous spot for YouTube in education, just for the potential of seeing harmful visual
things that may not be beneficial to her growth as a child and as a human being on this world.
Negative feedback is another thing. One is generally putting themself out there in the
open to be just ripped apart and that is something that can hit really close to the heart. And
it’s no fun, I would hope that cyber-bullying and the people that can facelessly degrade
someone else and their efforts, I would hope the common human respect for someone else
could grow and through education perhaps we can reduce cyber-bullying and other negative
feedback that is unnecessary. Constructive criticism, that’s another story.
Also VLOGs has the capability for mindless babble. And that can be a pro and it can be
a con. But, you know, people discussing their intimate details of their daily life might
not necessarily be the most productive use of YouTube, however where do you limit self-expression?
And one of the things I have, another personal concern I have is substituting it for human
contact relations and that’s, I think, going to be a growing concern in the future as the
YouTube allure gets larger and larger and people choosing to relate online in a fashion,
rather than go out and meet people and have fun, which is one of the great benefits of
being alive on this planet. So, that’s my first VLOG on YouTube in education,
I’m Noah Kadre and thank you for listening.
