This video is going to show you how to find articles for research and assignments.
In this video you will learn how to:
search for articles in our research databases,
find scholarly or peer reviewed journal articles,
find full text articles.
If you aren't sure which database would be the best to use, you can do a quick article search from the articles tab on the library home page.
Typing your search term in this box will search our two most popular databases,
Academic Search Complete, a broad multi- subject database,
and Business Source Complete.
Let's try a sample search here.
If your topic is about Internet neutrality
type in "internet neutrality" and hit the search button
If you are off-campus, you will be asked to login with your LEA username and password which is
the same as your Lamar e-mail account or Blackboard login.
The database will open to your results.
Below the search boxes you will find your search results.
You can click on the title of any article in the results list
to get some more information about the article.
From here you can find who wrote the article,
how recently it was published,
what subject areas it covers,
and a short summary, or abstract, of the article.
Let's return to the results list by clicking the "result list" link.
The total number of results can be found on the left hand side.
If you have a large number of results, as is the case here, you may want to refine your search.
Notice: your search term will be found in the search box in the upper left corner.
One way you can refine your search
is to enter additional search terms.
For example, "legislation."
Let's add the term legislation and click on the search button.
We recommend using separate boxes for each term you enter.
This will make it easier to adjust your search if you are not getting the results you need.
We now have a more manageable number of articles to work with.
Often your instructor will require scholarly or peer reviewed articles for your assignment.
Most of our databases have an option to limit the search to scholarly articles.
In this database, you could find this option on the left hand side under "efine your results."
Check the box that says "Scholarly
(Peer Reviewed) Journals" and hit update.
This will return only those scholarly articles in your results list.
You can also use the refine your results options to limit your search to only articles that have the full text available in your current database.
Check the "Full Text" box
and click update.
You can find the full text articles in the gray bars in the results list
or on the left hand side when looking at an individual record.
Clicking on the full text file will open up the full text of the article.
