Many MPs have taken advantage of the time made available to them
in the house to speak about issues important to them.
In the face of global warming and a drier climate,
the member for Capricornia, Michelle Landry,
praised the groundbreaking work of Central Queensland
University in developing new dry land rice crops.
Both parties have agreed to expand their research
and involve many growers in the coming seasons.
The view to this is to have the research and development
in place to make dry land rice growing commercially viable.
This is an area of huge importance for drought prone
Australia as we seek to develop Northern Australia
as the nation's next food bowl.
Member for Perth Alannah MacTiernan
stressed the benefits of a container deposit
scheme like South Australia's in developing
70% of the state's landfill waste to recycling.
It's not rocket science to support a container deposit
scheme.
South Australia introduced their legislation 30 years ago,
and now the scheme covers cans, plastics,
and glass bottles and coloured cartons.
It has created a major cultural shift
in that state, which is now the nation's best recyclers.
The South Australian scheme supports
charities and community groups with the South Australian
Scouts, earning $9 million per annum through their activities.
