Our task was to make a brief overview of traditional textile art in Crete.
Our road took us to Anogeia, where some lovely old women
still use their "argaleios" (=loom), like they've been doing for generations,
to make beautiful textile art
and they were willing to show us!
This is the comb
This is the petal
and it also has an old cross for decoration
These are balls of thread
If anything's missing..
These are saddles
There's a channel where you put the comb
and there are different channels for each size of comb
and different sizes of comb for each size of weave
This is the shuttle, the thread and the shuttle box
If this little thing's missing the weaver can do nothing
The loom consists of 101 parts
If even one of them's missing it doesn't work
I'll do the "vourgia" today with this pattern
I'll do the carpet tomorrow
The cypress pattern is five after five
open and close until it comes out
You have to count, otherwise you get nothing
Almost there! See?
Then we start with this pattern watching the distance in between
The shuttle box is empty, so we have to refill
We use the reel to refill
This is shorter and more tiresome to create
To pull this I use the breast beam
It's not difficult
It's quite easy
I'll now do a pattern in white followed by a black one
The loom is something you fall in love with!
There you go!
This is the black wheel pattern
This is the single bottom one
We call this one "soufroksoblo"
Because it's very difficult to make
"Come on! Are you doing the soufroksoblo?"
They used to tease girls when they delayed by saying:
So, what if you wanted to learn
how to make something like that nowadays?
In Lyceum Club of Women
apart from an exhibition of their vast collection
of traditional costumes from all parts of Greece
you can attend workshops in knitting, sewing and embroidery
taking place all year round, and learn how to make your own creations
Let's have a look!
This is called "the pointerie"
it goes like that
What other types exist?
Jersey, mousse, the upside down jersey
The pointe-blue, a variation of pointerie
Many different ones, and with the jacquard
you can have different colours and patterns
You can also weave on top of that
There's a cross formed here,
so we call this pattern the cross-stitch
and you can make many embroideries with that
This is the filterie, the petit-point and the root-stitch
and we use this one for seams
In times when the word "crisis" has entered our vocabulary,
do young girls really want to spend their time knitting?
Let's finish our trip with Sevasti
Right now, I'm doing a simple string-needle weave
which can be used in bags, shirts,
this cap over there
I began knitting with my grandma,
when I was still a kid
Cause it was the tradition at home,
both grandma and mother
used to knit everything we used
from everyday clothes
to tablecloths and towels
for more formal use
I started copying them as a hobby
and it became a lifetime experience
I like it because it is a creative hobby
to fill your time
and you have nice results to look at
It's double the pleasure to make your own clothes
than just buying them from a store
And you can make it exactly as you want it
Ah! I've also made a swimsuit!
