What is a Very Low Calorie Diet?
Hi! My name is Nikole and I write for healthybalanceddiet.org.a
According to Wikipedia, a very low calorie diet or
also known as VLCD, is a diet that extremely has very
low daily food energy intake that adds up to a total of
800 kilocalories per day or less. Even so, a VLCD also
takes in daily nutrient requirements such as
protein, fatty acids, vitamins and minerals.
What are the health benefits of following a VLCD?
If a person follows a very low calorie diet in a
short-term basis, it can:
Promote weight loss
Help improve glycemic control promoting
significant weight loss in obese people
that are suffering from type 2 diabetes
Increased insulin sensitivity and
lower risk of glucoeneogenesis
Helps improve glycemic control
What are the side-effects of this diet?
There are studies that have shown that
based on a 16-week use of a very low
calorie diet, minor side effects are
noted such as diarrhea, nausea, fatigue
and constipation. But these improve as
a person finishes the dietary program.
A more serious side effect noted when
following this diet is the formation of
gallstones most especially in women.
The reason for this could perhaps be
the speedy weight loss that lowers
the ability of the gallbladder to
contract bile. But these gallstones
are just small enough to cause any
discomfort and eventually disappear
when regular eating occurs.
