The average American should get a colonoscopy at age 50. There are certain populations that
need them sooner such as people with a family history of colon cancer at a young age and
in other patients with inflammatory bowel disease and other conditions. I guess the
main thing to know about a colonoscopy that people will talk about is the prep beforehand.
You do have to clean out your colon with an electrolyte solution, basically gives you
diarrhea. That's probably the most unpleasant part of the colonoscopy. It's a little bit
easier than it used to be but that's the most difficult part.
