Hi! This is artist Tara Reed and I wanted to do a quick video
about why you should consider using video to promote your art and your art business.
I am sitting here talking to my computer
it's a little awkward because I'd rather look at the screen, showing how I look
but I know if I look at that green button on my Mac laptop
that the video is going to look better and it's going to look like I'm talking to you.
So as one of my friends told me and I'll pass it on to you
one of the best video tips I ever got, she said look at that dot and pretend it's a dear friend
and just talk like you're having a conversation.
But why would you want to have a conversation with your computer
and then put that conversation on YouTube if you are an artist?
Did you know that 1/4 of the people who do Google searches are actually searching on YouTube?
Billions of people are looking for information and content
and amusement on YouTube.
So if some of those people are people that you want to reach
why not give it a shot?
What types of videos would you do?
You could do a video showing your work
if you wanted to do... almost like a slide show.
jpegs, and you could explain what you do, who you are...
Basically video is a great way for people to get to know you.
You're going to know a little bit more about me by listening to me and watching me talk
than you would by reading my blog posts.
It just comes across a little bit different.
If you are comfortable with it, have someone videotape you while you are working.
while you're painting, while you're sculpting, while you're putting a mural in a kid's room
whatever type of art you do.
Also do videos of yourself at an event
if you're a gallery artist and you enjoy doing gallery openings
and the little cheese nights, have someone bring a video camera.
have them film your work in the gallery. Have them film you talking to people.
so when you approach the next gallery they will say, "Oh wow! Ok, I can see you in the atmosphere
you look professional, you look comfortable" and they are going to be more comfortable bringing you into their gallery.
So there are many ways that you can use video to help promote.
If you teach... a lot of people go to YouTube to figure out how to do something
so do some short videos that show a little bit of a technique or whatever people can get to know you
then they can sign up for your class, either online, in person, whatever.
Just think outside of the box. Or you can just do it to have a lot of fun.
Which videos go most viral? Meaning people pass them on, pass them on pass them on...
They are usually the ones that are really unique or really funny
If you can find a way to tell people about your art and your brand and what you do
in an interesting and funny way, maybe you spoof a commercial or do a funny song
that's also a great idea as well. Just make sure that whatever you put is true to who you are
true to your art and true to your brand.
You don't want to have so much fun and then confuse your brand.
Now you also have no more excuses about why not to do it
because you can make videos on an iPhone, because you can make videos on a FlipVideo,
you can make videos from most digital cameras these days.
or like me, you can simply talk to your laptop - if it's new enough it will have audio and video capabilities.
So I challenge you to start talking, get some video on YouTube and see what you can do.
This is artist Tara Reed signing off. Here's to your creative success!
