Railroad Worker Injury Informational Video: Gregory Shaffer
At Wilentz we represent a lot of railroad workers who are injured on the job. There
are a lot of ways that you can get hurt on the job because as you probably know the railroad
is a dangerous place to work. Some of the ways in which you get injured might not manifest
itself for years to come. You can be exposed to chemicals, asbestos has been there for
years, PCBs and diesel fumes, and you might not suffer symptoms for years to come such
as _____________ lung, shortness of breath, in some cases workers actually get lung cancer
from chemicals and particles they are exposed to on the job. A lot of workers don't understand
that if you are getting a disease down the road, that it is really the exposure to chemicals
or particles earlier and in some cases decades earlier that cause the disease. And some workers
they smoke on the job and smoking can be a causal factor to lung cancer, but in fact
smoking creates an additional risk if you are being exposed to these cancer causing
materials on the job, they work together and not to your benefit. But the railroad has
a responsibility to make sure that you have a safe workplace and that includes teaching
all the workers about proper safety procedures, providing the proper equipment, including
masks, and a lot of times they don't do that. So that's why we're here. We're here to protect
your rights, protect the future of your family, especially if you are no longer able to work.
And we know the law whereas the average worker might not be able to protect himself when
he is injured on the job. So if you have any reason to believe that you might have been
exposed to a dangerous material on the job and you have a condition that might be caused
by something you encountered even a couple of decades ago, we're the first call you want
to make after your doctor. That's what we do, we protect the rights of the workers and
we always are able to stay on top of each and every particular worker's case and we
use our experience to make sure that you are properly cared for not only immediately, but
in years to come when your family is no longer able to receive the benefit of your wages
and your income.
