In this chapter, my purpose is to get you acquainted, for those of you that are
unfamiliar, with the world of 3D. I want to help you understand the basic
workflow in 3D. I want to acquaint you with basic concepts, such as meshes,
materials, and lighting, and that type of thing.
Now you can skip this chapter if you want, but if you are unfamiliar with these
concepts, I highly recommend going through them to get yourself acquainted.
The world of 3D is very different than the world of 2D.
Now as a teaching tool, I'm going to be using a dedicated 3D program. In this case,
I'm going to be using Cinema4D. At the end of this chapter, I'm going to
be giving you an introduction in some of the more common and popular 3D
packages, such as Cinema4D. It's not necessary to use a 3D application with
Photoshop but it can help. Although you can create 3D objects from scratch
in Photoshop, you really do need a dedicated 3D program like this to create
really complex objects. As I'm using Cinema4D, I realize this is very
complicated for those of you that are unfamiliar with what's going on here.
That's okay. You do not need a background in 3D. Quite the opposite, this
training is especially for those of you that are unfamiliar with this
environment. But don't get caught up in the fact that I'm using this new
application. My point isn't to teach you Cinema4D. There is tons of other
training on lynda.com to do that. My point here is just to use this as a teaching
tool to get you acquainted with 3D concepts. So that being said, let's jump
into it and learn about the world of 3D.
