>>Randy: Hi, my name is Randy, a general contractor in the Dallas area. I'm here today with UniqueVanities.com
and our Ask The Contractor Question. Today's question is "How to install stacked stone
in a bathroom." Stacked stone tile is kind of what we are
talking about, I think, and that's commonly used on shower walls as either the whole wall,
an accent, or a backsplash. Stacked stone or any other mosaics will come in a sheet
where all the small pieces are tied together or hooked together on a mesh.
You can put it up a lot like normal tile, where you will have a either hearty backer
or some sort of tile backer material. Then you will put mastic or thin sand up on the
wall and then stick the sheets to that. The trick of it is is keeping it all straight
because it's going to want to move instead of sitting like one solid piece of tile. When
you get the sheets of tile with the stacked stone or any other mosaics, they come in an
interlocking design or pattern, so when you put them together, you can't see where the
different sheets of tile are. So, that's where the tricky part comes in. If you have to cut
it, you pretty much have to use a wet saw and slide the whole sheet through the saw.
The other trick with any kind of mosaic or stone like that is it's going to use a grout
release over it first. So, you put it on or you can put the grout release on it first,
stick the stuff to the wall. That way, when you go to grout it, it comes off the face
of the stone because most of the time that's going to be real porous and the grout is going
to want to stick to that. So, what you are trying to do is make it release off of the
face, but just stick into the cracks or the joints anywhere you want the grout to stick.
Then washing it multiple times to get all the grout off the face of the tile is also
a key factor. If you have any questions or comments, you
can leave them below this video and we may feature you on the next Ask The Contractor
post.
