A new dialysis unit has opened
in the Northcote for diabetes sufferers,
and the idea has also been floated
to introduce dialysis machines to marae to aid Maori sufferers.
A new dialysis unit has been opened.
That is a victory indeed, in my view
– to have this unit established for sufferers in Northcote.
In the past, diabetes sufferers in Northcote
had to travel into Auckland city.
Now they have their own unit.
According to the manager of Papakura Marae,
the best way to help Maori diabetes sufferers
is to bring the dialysis machines to the marae.
The many Maori sufferers of diabetes can support one another.
Bring the families back to the marae.
I support that idea, but we need to look at how we can do that.
At the moment it's still just an idea,
but Tony believes the Counties-Manukau DHB will back it.
The Health Minister also welcomes the idea.
We shall see.
Tony Kake hopes all marae will consider the idea.
